The Future of FiOS

high-speed-internetFiOS , is the fiber optic network developed and entirely deployed by Verizon. FiOs, (fiber optic service) is available in some areas of the United States but not available everywhere as of now. Texas, California and parts of the east coast are wired with Verizon’s fiber optic network but other parts of the country are not able to utilize the technology yet. The benefit of fiber optic wiring is the improved speed and bandwidth of data delivery. This can be extremely valuable for video transmissions like HDTV. In areas that have FiOS services, home users can subscribe to Verizon FiOS service (HDTV, telephone, and internet) for a monthly service fee.

Verizon’s FiOs technology

Verizon was formed out of several traditional telephone companies merging together in the late 90’s. In 2004 Verizon began the costly undertaking of installing the fiber cables directly to homes where it already had traditional copper wiring installed. Verizon called its network “FiOS”. The fiber optic wiring that FiOs uses has been entirely funded by Verizon. At this time the company has spent over 20 billon dollars on the project. The gamble is that in the future users will demand the faster technology. Some companies, such as Youtube have begun to offer services that require fiber optic technology. Over time it is expected that more companies will also offer streaming video services that operate on a fiber optic network. The method of delivering services can be either directly through an internet connection or through hardware set top box. FiOs also offers a VoIP digital voice service to some areas.

A great customer experience will help make FiOs a success

Right now Verizon is betting on the future. As with anything, the customer experience is a big part the success of the product or service. But cable companies are also updating their cabling and adding fiber optic wiring to the home too. Verizon had the foresight to begin the process earlier and if their FiOS technology proves to be a noticeable improvement to the existing technologies customers will buy in to purchasing the service. Even with cable companies working to catch up if Verizon succeeds in providing greater customer service and a superior product its FiOs technology will be a success.
