Setting up WoW to run in Linux Wine

April 8th, 2008 by admin

Since I know HollyDawg will want this documented, and also for my personal reference, I am posting how I setup WoW to run in WINe on my Ubuntu Gutsy Box.

Most of this info can be found here:
http://www.wowwiki.com/Linux/Wine

1. For Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon (7.10)
sudo wget http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/sources.list.d/gutsy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq.list

2. Now do these commands in Terminal:
wget -q http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/387EE263.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install wine

3. Copy all of the files from all of the CD’s or downloads (I just downloaded mine) to a directory on your hard drive (overwrite when prompted).

4. In Terminal:
cd /(path-to-directory)/
wine Installer.exe

5. Wait and click INSTALL on the GUI that comes up.6. In Terminal, run this command and make sure that XP is chosen in the drop-down menu.
winecfg

7. Now run this command in a terminal:
gedit ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/World\ of\ Warcraft/wtf/Config.wtf
When trying to save this file, I got an error. I think it was due to the “\” in this code. What I did was just open a GUI window and browsed to /home/(your profile name)/.wine/drive_c/ Program Files/ World of Warcraft/wtf folder and saved the edited file (in the next step) in here.

8. Add these lines to the empty text file:
SET SoundOutputSystem "1"
SET SoundBufferSize "150"
SET gxApi "OpenGL"

9. Save the file in the directory Inamed in step 7.

10. You can launch WoW via Applications –> WINE –>Programs –>World of Warcraft, or through a Terminal window with:
wine "C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\WoW.exe"

Addons:
Copy any addons you have into /home/(your profile name)/.wine/drive_c/ Program Files/ World of Warcraft/Interface/Addons. I am using 5-6 different ones right now and they all work fine.

Almost mandatory performance enhancing tweak
This is a simple registry edit for Wine that will dramatically increase the framerate in game for both ATi and nVidia users.

Open a terminal window, type regedit and press enter. This will start the Wine equivalent of the windows registry editor. If you are familiar with using the registry editor under windows then this is pretty much the same.

Notice: the guide below is case sensitive!

1. Find this key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\
2. Highlight the wine folder in the left hand pane by clicking left on it. The icon should change to an open folder
3. Right-click on the wine folder and select [NEW][KEY]
4. Replace the text New Key #1 with OpenGL
5. Right-click in the right hand pane and select [NEW] then [String Value]
6. Replace New Value #1 with DisabledExtensions
7. Then double click anywhere on the line, a dialog box will open.
8. In the value field type GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object

My video was very choppy. After adding this, it cleared up completely. In the Config.wtf file, add:
SET ffxDeath "0"
SET ffxGlow "0"

If you experience stuttering, bad sound or no sound what so ever, then add the following options as well:
SET SoundOutputSystem "1"
SET SoundBufferSize "150"

World of Warcraft: Blood Elf Paladin Quest Log

April 5th, 2008 by admin

So I have been playing WoW for about 2 weeks now. My Undead Warrior is up to level 23 and my Orc Warlock is up to level 12. I have found some sites that log leveling guides, such as Joanna’s Site and I have decided that I am going to blog here about my 3rd character which I just started today.

You can find more about my general WoW escapades at My Personal Blog; this blog is just for this one character, leveling from L1 up to L70 (L80?) or as high as I can get him.

Today I registered a new Blood Elf Paladin and named him DèmonHuntér. You will notice the special characters of é and è in places of the e’s…this is due to the fact that the name “DemonHunter” was taken. My namesake came from http://www.demonhunter.net/

The Paladins start out atSunstrider Isle, in Ghostlands. I am told that only Paladins go to Ghosland, or at least start there. I am not sure, but it is something unique to them.

Quest 1: Reclaiming Sunstrider Isle: I got this quest from Magistrix Erona at 38.22. The task is to kill 8 of these Mana Wyrms. They are located right in the vicinity of where you are, look for them floating in the air. Each wrym gives you XP fo 50 points and this puts you into L2 because it is only 400 points to get to L2. Kill all 8, level up to L2 and turn in the quest to Magistrix Erona for bonus of 100 XP. Grab the next quest from her, Unfortunate Measures. Also grab the Paladin Training quest from her.

When you turn in all of these quests and you have a choice of items to win, always check your character button for what he is wearing, Paladins are cool because they can wear Mail, like chain, and that is really strong. So keep getting and putting on as much heavier clothing and protection as you can. Mail is preferred, but until you get all Mail, wear Leather or Cloth or whatever you can get your hands on. Something is better than nothing.

2: Paladin Training Turn into Jesthenis Sunstriker, right inside the building where Magistrix Erona is standing. Gain XP:40. Grab Well Watcher Solanian from Jesthenis also. Three other quests should show on your mini map, A Fistfull of Slivers, Thirst Unending, and Solanian’s Belongings.

3: Well Watcher Solanian: Solanian’s Belongings is up the tower, and you get it from Well Watcher Solanian, who you also turn in a quest with the same name and gain XP:15. Also grab The Shrine of Dath’ Remar.

4: Unfortunate Measures - Go kill Springpaw Cubs, around 40.24, 18.40, to the NE of the tower. Turn into Magistrix Erona, the same place you got it, gain XP:250. This should level you up to L3. Grab a new quest from her, Report to Lanthan Perilon.

5: Report to Lanthan Perilon - This guy is at 35.40, 22.51. Just turn the quest in, nothing else to do, gain XP:25. Grab a new quest from him called Aggression.

6: A Fistfull of Slivers and Thirst Unending - Go grind on those Mana Wyrms again, using your Mana Tap weapon and looting silver from them for these 2 quests. Gain XP:360 for Fistfull and XP:250 for Thirst.

7: Aggression: The best place to kill these guys are around 34.26. You should level up to 4 during this time. If not keep grinding till you do. Turn it back in to Lanthan Perilon and get XP: 360, and grab Felendren the Banished from him.

8: Solanian’s Belongings: Pickup the journal at 37.68. Turn back into Well Watcher Solanian for XP: 360.

9:  The Shrine of Dath’ Remar - find at 30.00, 19.00

I’ve joined Flickr

January 9th, 2008 by admin

My Flickr Photo page

I signed up for a Flickr account and am planning on using it to promote and/or sell my photos that I used to list on www.deepellumphotos.com .  Most of my current work is from traveling and taking photos of different cities and areas around the US, but I also have some stuff from my trip to London in 2005.  My hopes are to go back to London soon and then to take a trip to Israel within the next year, where I will take so many shots that I fill up my HDD on my laptop :O

One reason for setting up a new Flickr site is a post on read on this blog a couple of months ago.   I keep a RSS Feed on my bloglines from this blog and read many of their suggestions.

Keep checking >:O

Happy New Year, 2008!

January 1st, 2008 by admin

I wanted to post on Jan 1 and wish everyone a Happy New Year for 2008.  I am not really much into doing “new year’s resolutions” but I would like to set a goal for myself to blog more this year.  I’ve had one internet business close down, but 3 or 4 more open in 2007.  Additionally I have plans for several more sites that could be good with Making Money Online or gaining members and hit-counts, or hopefully both.  I don’t want to divulge too much yet, but keep checking back this year for new projects that I am working on.

2007 Projects:

My most successful 2007 kick-off project was my new Heroes Blog, based on the hit TV show Heroes.  Before the show ended for the writer’s strike, I was averaging about 300 hits/day.  That doesn’t sound like much really, but considering I haven’t promoted the site hardly at all, it is less than 6 months old AND that once I registered it and put up the first homepage, it was already a P2 on Google, I don’t think it is bad at all.

The other 2 projects are my Dexter Blog, based on the Showtime original series Dexter, and the Bionic Woman Blog I put up for that show. Dexter and Heroes seem to be doing quite well with ratings, but I am not too hopeful about The Bionic Woman.

Everyone have a great New Year and check back often for more updates in 2008.

Amazon or iTunes?

December 23rd, 2007 by admin

Amazon.com is now selling downloadable mp3s that are DRM-free and will play on any machine or mp3 player.  This isn’t really new, they have been doing it for a while, but what I didn’t realize when I first read it that it would download right into your iTunes Library.  Also, I have found that most full CDs are about $1 less than what you pay on iTunes, added to the fact that they are DRM-free MP3 files.

So I wanted to buy one of the older Demon Hunter albums  and I got it on Amazon for $9.49 (only 50 cents cheaper than iTunes) but I got the songs in MP3 format, DRM-free and placed right into my iTunes Library.

Methinks Amazon found a new customer :D

I’ve Switched from Trillian to Pidgin

November 9th, 2007 by admin

I’ve been using this program called Pidgin on Ubuntu for some time now and just this week I found that they had a Windows version also. Maybe they have had that for a while, I dont’ know, never really looked. But I found it this week, installed it at work (where we use Sametime) and I am using it for everything now.

I like the sleek interface and the fact that it actually works with IRC. Trillian was kinda hit-or-miss with IRC, and the connection to Sametime with Trillian was an additional plugin that you had to install (and needed admin rights to if it is a work machine) so it made it more cumbersome to get Sametime working. Not so with Pidgin, it is just another account-type connection like AIM or Yahoo. And Pidgin includes GoogleTalk also, which Trillian didn’t connect to unless you went through a Jabber server.

So go check out Pidgin, it is a sweet little program.

Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Released

October 20th, 2007 by admin

Get Gutsy here:

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

I ran the update from my 7.04 Fiesty box and it worked great. I remember last time trying to update from Edgy to Fiesty and it didn’t seem to go so well, though right now I can’t remember why. But the update to Gutsy will work great if you follow these 2 stesps:

1) Make sure you are already running 7.04 Fiesty. You won’t be able to update to Gutsy from any previous version, you will need to download the ISO and install from scratch if you aren’t currently running Fiesty.

2) Run your update manager and make sure you have installed all updates to your Fiesty box. After installing all the updates listed, click the “check” box on the update manager to re-check again, to be safe. This is recommended by Ubuntu.

Afterwards, it takes about 2-24 hours to update, depending on your connection. Since I am on FIOS, it only took me about 2.5 hours total.

Satellite TV Guru Blog

September 24th, 2007 by admin

Man, I love blogs. Not only for their built-in RSS Feeders that keep you up-to-date so well, but also because of just how they are laid out to provide you with all the latest info for whatever subject or niche they are promoting. I found a really great one today for Satellite TV

http://www.satellitetvguru.net lets you compare the two largest Satellite TV services, they show you how to install and setup a new Dish, they give helpful tips on saving money on your Satellite system by providing you with cool coupons and promotions offered by these companies, and they even have a section for Satellite Radio.

I signed up for Direct TV myself a while back, because at the time they had the best promotion going, and I wanted something that I could setup out far away from the city limits at my Deer Lease. I wish that I had known about http://www.satellitetvguru.net  at the time because they would have been quite helpful is getting me the best deal and showing me how to set it up, especially where I was at the time.  It was WAY out away from the city limits and all I wanted was a way to watch the Sunday Football game, LOL.  So check this site out and even add them to your RSS Feeder to be kept up on the latest reviews.
